Appalachian State University was led to victory by Junior Kevin Richardson to its second-straight national championship. The newly formed NCAA Division 1 Football Championship Series (formerly NCAA Division 1-AA) game was played against UMASS on Friday evening at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Mountaineers rushed for a total of 285 yards against the Minutemen of UMASS, 179 of which were Richardson’s. This was the most yardage given up by the minutemen since November 9, 2002.

UMASS scored on the first series of the game with a 23-yard run from star running back Steve Baylark. Appalachian responded with Richardson’s 45 yard run at the end of the first quarter. Things slowed down for both teams until less than a minute remained in the first half and Richardson had a six yard run to put Appalachian on top 14-7 at the half.

The Minutemen tied the game again in the third quarter after capitalizing on an interception, but the Mountaineers took the lead on another Richardson score with 13 minutes left to play. The Minutemen were held to a field goal on their next possession by a strong Appalachian defense. At that point they turned the ball over to the Mountaineers who methodically marched down the field in an 80 yard drive. Richardson scored his fourth touchdown and gave Appalachian State a 28-17 margin with 2 minutes left in the game. The crowd set a Finley Stadium record of 22,808.
